Richard Schaefer says David Haye should have fought Vitali Klitschko – Boxing news
The chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer reckons the Hayemaker, David Haye, should have taken on the WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko instead of the IBF, WBO, IBO and Ring Magazine world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko
on July 2, 2011.
The 30-year-old Londoner, Haye, lost his WBA world heavyweight championship belt in a unification bout for the heavyweight titles against Dr. Steelhammer, Wladimir Klitschko last Saturday at Hamburg’s Imtech Arena in Germany. Schaefer believes he should
have gone in the ring against Vitali.
Schaefer told the media that Wladimir, who has successfully defended his heavyweight titles for the 11th time, is more athletic than his elder brother Vitali.
“Oscar De La Hoya and our matchmakers actually liked Vitali more than Wladimir. That’s because Wladimir’s the more athletic one while Vitali’s more robotic and has greater difficult moving,” said Schaefer.
Schaefer stated Haye’s main weapon is his speed and athleticism and it could have been best utilised against Vitali, as he is a bit slower than his younger brother.
“David’s strength is his athleticism, movement and speed. That would be magnified against Vitali, because Vitali is so mechanical,” added Schaefer.
The chief of Golden Boy Promotions claimed Haye still has the spark and he is still the most colourful boxer in the heavyweight division.
The Klitschko-Haye bout had a lot of hype before the fight but the fight did not go ahead as expected. There were no knockdowns in the fight, as both boxers fought in a defensive mode.
Schaefer remarked Klitschko brothers are gentle giants and heavyweight boxing needs something different. He also revealed nobody likes Klitschkos in the United States only because of their less aggressive style of play.
He said, “It takes two to tango...did anyone think Klitschko’s performance was exciting? Why didn’t he take more risks? Because he was winning and if you fight with that mentality you’ll be known as a boring fighter, which is what he is. In the States do
you think anybody cares about the Klitschkos?”
Let’s see whether David Haye gets a match against Vitali Klitschko or not, as he does not have any titles with him now to claim such a big fight.
