Richard Schaefer speculates on Floyd Mayweather-Amir Khan
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, recently speculated on the possibility of a fight between superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan. He explained that he would be extremely excited to arrange the fight,
and said that he would remain so should Khan get past challenger Marcos Maidana in December.
Schaefer noted that the fight will be contingent on Mayweather, saying: "At the end of the day it's going to be up to Mayweather and what he wants to do. It's in that same sense of putting big fights together. If you have Amir Khan who is going to clean
up the 140-pound division and be the last man standing there, with his speed and power I can imagine that [Mayweather-Khan] is a fight fans want to see.”
He continued: “And if the TV networks are going to support it, then of course that is going to be a fight I want to put together. Any big fight which can be made, I'm going to try and get made. That is the only way you can keep the momentum going in boxing
and I do think we have the momentum. What you are going to see in November and December is the best fight lineup we have seen in 20 years."
November 13 will host Antonio Margarito-Manny Pacquiao, a bout expected to draw 70,000 people to the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Following that will be Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez for the WBC middleweight title on November 20. The first time they
met, the fight was widely considered the best of the year. Besides that, star fighters such as Juan Manuel Marquez, Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana, Andre Direll, Andre Ward, Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch, Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal are slated to put on the gloves
before the New Year.
Following an incident early this month, Mayweather faces charges for larceny and battery. Should he be convicted, a bout with Amir Khan will be pushed back indefinitely.
