Richard Schaefer thrilled for Abner Mares-Joseph Agbeko rematch – Boxing news
Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer is very excited about the Abner Mares vs. Joseph Agbeko rematch scheduled to take place on December 3, 2011.
Abner Mares and Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko met each other on August 13, 2011 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada for their 118-pound International Boxing Federation bantamweight championship title.
Mares won the bout via majority decision but it ended up in a storm of controversy due to which IBF, the sanctioning body for the fight, ordered a rematch within 120 days.
Therefore, Mares and Agbeko will now be seen in action on December 3, 2011 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California in a much-anticipated rematch which will be shown live on Showtime.
The 25-year-old Mexican pugilist, Mares, landed numerous low blows on Agbeko’s body, and he received five warnings, but was never docked a point. However, the most inappropriate conduct by the referee, Russell Mora, was seen in the 11th round
when Mares sent Agbeko to his knees with an obvious low blow and Mora, instead of penalising Mares, counted it as a knockdown.
Thus the Golden Boy promoter, Richard Schaefer, who promotes Mares, is very excited for the rematch as he reckons it will be a pretty explosive fight.
“We have finalized it,” Schaefer told ESPN.com. “I'm thrilled about it. It's a much-anticipated rematch.”
Schaefer claimed his fighter, Mares,  who holds an undefeated record of winning 21 of his of his 22 professional fights (1 Draw), with 13 of his wins coming by the way of a knockdown, is the most skilled fighter in the bantamweight division and his last
win over Agbeko was not a fluke.
Schaefer stated, “I really think when it comes to this weight class that this is Abner Mares' time. When you watch him and how he has developed the last year or so, he has really developed into a top bantamweight. The first time he beat Agbeko it wasn't
a fluke. He will confirm that and remain world champion in an impressive manner. That is what I expect from him. This is his time.”
The Agbeko-Mares rematch will certainly be an explosive fight after all that has happened so far. However, let’s see if Mares can really beat Agbeko this time.
