Richard Sterne and Trevor Fisher Junior share the halfway lead at the Joburg Open
Richard Sterne of South Africa fired a bogey-free seven-under par 65, in the second round of the European Tour’s Joburg Open, to share the halfway lead with Trevor Fisher Junior, on Friday, February 9, 2013.
The tournament is being staged at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington’s West Course, featuring some of the best European Tour players from different parts of the world.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, the South African has shown consistency in his game, and has not conceded a single bogey so far in his first two rounds.
He opened his campaign with a stunning eight-under par 63 in the first round. His performance included six birdies and an amazing eagle on the ninth hole.
The second round also witnessed him playing some brilliant shots on the course. He birdied four of the first nine holes on day two, to reach the turn in four under.
He then parred each of the next five holes, prior to finishing the day with three birdies over the last four holes.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, Sterne expressed his pleasure in entering the weekend with the shared lead in hand.
“I did the right things and putted well,” he said. “It's nice to not be behind going into the weekend. It won't be easy on the weekend. The players that are five or six back can catch us as well. Charl's there, George is due a win, so it's a long way from
over”.
Fisher Junior, in the meantime, stunned his opponents by recording a scintillating nine-under par 63 in the second round. His performance included seven birdies and an amazing eagle on the second hole.
He also participated in the 2012 edition of the tournament and finished third on the leaderboard. This year, he plans to go two positions better, as he enters the weekend sharing the lead with Sterne.
“It was a great day out there,” he said. “Everything just happened for me and I sank the putts I needed to sink. I was happy and patient with myself – walked slow and did everything slow – and it was just a good day”.
