Richard Wallis holds the second position after day two of the Titleist PGA Play Offs
Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club’s Richard Wallis opened his campaign well by carding a four-under par 67, to trail David Higgins of Waterville Golf Links by one stroke, at the Titleist PGA Play Offs, on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.
The tournament is being played at the Antalya Golf Club’s PGA Sultan Course, where a total of three coveted spots are on offer for the 2013 PGA Cup.
At the end of the event, the top-three players to finish on the leaderboard will earn their way into the Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team.
In addition to that, the top-10 players will also receive an invitation to participate in next year’s BMW PGA Championship.
Wallis, who won the 2011 edition of the tournament, got off to a confident start, by recording birdies on three of the first five holes that he played.
He then suffered the only blemish of his round on the seventh hole, to reach the turn in two-under.
The back nine of the course witnessed him add another two shots to his scorecard, as he birdied the 15th and the 17th hole.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, the three-time PGA South Region Order of Merit champion expressed his pleasure in getting into contention, right from the beginning of the event.
He also praised the way Higgins played in the opening round, and said that he will have to maintain consistency in his game, in order to make it to the top of the leaderboard.
"We all know that we are chasing David Higgins this week. He's had a fantastic year topped off by getting his tour card, so we are just trying to hang on to his coat tails," said Wallis, who defeated Higgins last year to raise the trophy.
He added, “I'm happy with four under and would have taken that this morning because it was quite blowy out there. I'm happy here because it's a course that suits me and I just aim to play steady and try and hang on to David but the field is very strong and the course is set up quite tricky”.
