Richard Wallis shares the lead, midway through the third round of the Titleist PGA Play-Offs
Richard Wallis carded a two-under par score through six holes, in the third and final round of the Titleist PGA Play-Offs in Turkey, before the inclement weather forced the game to be suspended on Wednesday, December 12, 2012.
The tournament is being played at the Antalya Golf Club’s PGA Sultan Course, featuring top-notch professionals from the region.
At the end of the tournament, a total of three players will secure their places in the Great Britain and Ireland team for the 2013 PGA Cup.
In addition to that, the winner of the event will earn a place in the 2013 edition of the BMW PGA Championship, to be held at the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England.
After taking a one-stroke lead, entering the third round, he moved one stroke back with a bogey on the first hole. He then added a shot to his scorecard, by recording a birdie on the third hole.
The highlight of his performance included a chip-in-birdie shot on the sixth hole, which allowed him to retain the share of the lead with David Higgins of Ireland.
"On the sixth I tried to hit a soft cut four iron and hit the pin high trap. The pin was cut seven feet from the right but I played a flop shot out, the ball landed on top of the apron, dug its boots in and rolled in for a nice little birdie,” he explained.
"It was timely because David had made an awesome eagle up three, birdied five and was standing over a 16-footer for birdie on six. I think when I holed it out the trap it made a little bit of a difference because he left it three foot short,” he added.
Talking to the reporters after the suspension of the round, Wallis also said that he was pleased to know about the reduction of the tournament to 54 holes.
According to him, he will have to hold his nerves in the final moments of the tournament, in a bid to successfully defend his title in Turkey.
Last year, he defeated Higgins and Simon Lilly in the playoffs to secure his place in the 2012 edition of the BMW PGA Championship.
