Richard Webb aims to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics - Swimming News
Great Britain’s breast-stroke swimmer, Richard Webb, has announced his long-term plan with the intention that he aims to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
The 24-year-old Webb won the bronze medal in the 100m breast-stroke at the 2011 British Gas Swimming National Championships and failed to confirm his berth in the British squad to the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July. He also participated in the 200m breast-stroke at the same championships and finished fourth in the event.
Webb failed to qualify for the British team, as he failed to occupy the top two spots in any event. Nevertheless, the swimmer has got another shot to claim the Shanghai spot in the 100m breast-stroke, as the upcoming British ASA Nationals act as the second trial to finalise the team to Shanghai titles.
Webb expressed that he would feel great to step on the Shanghai starting blocks but he stressed that his main objective is to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
Richard has switched several clubs and coaches to enhance his performance. While expressing his views, the swimmer claimed that he has never switched clubs and coaches before, but now he considers it necessary, as he wants a boost in his performance.
He also uttered that he wanted to represent his country at the Shanghai Championships in the 200m breast-stroke, but he regrettably finished fourth at the trials and now he does not have the chance to qualify for the 200m event at the second trials.
Webb said, “While I am disappointed it wasn't the greatest result to not go and not qualify, it isn't the end of the world and I would rather sacrifice this year to swim well next year, that is one of the tough decisions you have to make in the sport and it is just something that I hope pays off.”
He added, “I missed the Beijing qualifying time by 0.03 seconds in the 200m, which was gutting so I am anxious for that not to happen again and obviously London will be a once in a lifetime experience. That adds to the desire to go.”
Richard is very hopeful of his London qualification, saying that he will work hard to represent his nation at the biggest stage of sports.
