Richard Webb claims the breast-stroke event to be most competitive category in UK - Swimming News
British National bronze medallist, Richard Webb, has claimed that breast-stroke events are the most competitive in UK swimming.
The 24-year-old Webb explained his view and said that UK Swimming has remarkable female freestyle swimmers and there are four to six slots for the freestyle swimmers, to complete the 4*100m freestyle and 4*200m freestyle relay teams.
Whereas, a breast-stroke swimmer has to occupy the top two spots to confirm his participation at major events and they take part in individual breast-stroke events, while the winner competes in the 4*100m medley relay also.
Explaining the limitation of breast-stroke swimmers, Webb said that Great Britain has almost six breast-stroke swimmers with analogous timings.
He said, “But in the breaststroke you are only ever an individual and you have two places and that is it and I think there are five or six of us all around similar times.”
The 24-year-old Richard failed the first qualification attempt in the British team to the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, during July. Richard settled third on the podium at the 2011 British Gas National Swimming Championships, but failed to qualify
for the world titles. He also competed in the 200m breast-stroke and finished fourth behind Michael Jamieson, Andrew Willis and Kris Gilchrist.
The British swimmer stands another chance to qualify for China, as British Swimming is conducting their second selection trial next month, in Sheffield.
While acknowledging Mills’ wonderful effort in the 200m event, Webb said, “Andrew Willis swam really well, he swam out of his skin, but he has been there for years, he has been coming through and everyone within swimming you know who is coming through.”
Richard also referred to his swim, saying that it was his worst performance, but he also claims to have learnt his lesson and now he has set his aim to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The British swimmer said that he is preparing very hard to
qualify for the Britain team, saying that he will do his country good at the Home Olympics.
