Richie Ramsay loses to Thaworn Wiratchant in the playoffs at the Hero Indian Open
Richie Ramsay of Scotland missed out on a chance of recording his maiden Asian Tour victory after losing to Thawron Wiratchant on the first extra hole in the playoffs of the Hero Indian Open, on Sunday, October 21, 2012.
The approximately US$1.25 million tournament was being played at the Karnataka Golf Association course in Bengaluru, featuring some of the best players on the Asian Tour.
The Scot started off his final round campaign with the top position in hand. Three birdies on the first five holes further strengthened his position on the leaderboard.
However, he failed to keep the momentum going and conceded back-to-back bogeys on the sixth and the seventh hole.
He then bounced back with a couple of birdies on the ninth and the eleventh hole. Entering the final hole, he had a one-stroke lead over the Thai star.
Therefore, he only needed a par putt to record a victory. However, he was extremely unlucky to miss the par putt and finished with a bogey five.
As a result, both Ramsay and Wiratchant entered the sudden-death playoffs, where Ramsay double bogeyed the first extra hole.
Meanwhile, Wiratchant managed to turn in the ball for a bogey to record his third Asian Tour victory of the season.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Ramsay stated that he himself was shocked on the bogey that he made on the final hole in regulation. According to him, he was playing really well right from the beginning of the tournament.
He stated that it was his title which was later handed over to Wiratchant, just because of a small mistake on the 18th green.
“I stayed committed to every shot but Thaworn played good. It was mine to win and a very strange thing happened on the last because I’ve been excellent under pressure the whole week,” said Ramsay.
“I had a great third shot in the play-off which landed at the back of the green. If there was a good lie, I would have fancied knocking that in. I could have gotten a very easy up-and-down but it was lying in a bad pitch mark. Some days, things just don’t
go your way,” he added.
