Richie Ramsay unfortunate not to qualify for the US Open at Congressional
Scotland’s Richie Ramsay turned out to be the most unfortunate contenders at the US Open Qualifier on Monday, May 30 when he failed to qualify without getting a chance to hit the ball for the last hole.
Ramsay had finished his round earlier with a four-under at the Walton Heath Old and New, England, before the match was delayed as dense fog began to settle on eastern Surrey. The golfer decided to attend fellow Tour player Gareth Maybin’s wedding ceremony
in Belfast and had left the club soon after completing the holes. Missing the flight, he returned to the course only to face his worst nightmare coming to life.
The organizers had decided to pull in one extra hole as the lightning improved at the course and Swede Johan Edfors defeated Dane Andreas Harto to qualify for the last eleven places for the second major of the season.
"It's just been a horrific day - an awful, awful day," said the Aberdeen golfer. "As I left it was 5.30pm and guys were teeing off the first. I actually feel physically sick - I can't believe they played when it was pitch dark."
Whatever might be the reasons or whoever is to be blamed for the unfortunate incident, Ramsay will never forget the 2011 US Open. The 27-year-old became the only English player in a century to win the United States Amateur Championship in 2006. He turned
professional in 2007 and has won twice on the Challenge Tour in 2008.
"That's hard work - it was miserable out there." said the Scot after most of the second round was played in rain.
Last year’s European Ryders Cup captain and celebrated player Colin Montgomerie also failed to qualify after his lopsided performance of one-over, 145. Eleven players qualified for the event, scheduled from June 16-19, including Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium,
Shane Lowry of UK, Maarten Lafeber of Netherland, Frenchman Thomas Levet, Robert Rock, Robert Dinwiddie, David Howell, Stephen Gallacher of England, Swede Alexander Noren, Marcel Siem of Germany, and Johan Edfors from Sweden.
England’s star player, Ross Fisher also failed to break into the Top 11 after his disappointing one-over. Fisher played brilliantly in this year’s Ryders Cup to guide Europe to a decisive victory and still holds his chances to participate in the US Open
after his two Top 5 finishes at the Congressional. Ranked 52nd according to Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Fisher will be hoping to post a strong finish in coming events to propel him in the Top 50.
