Richmond, Virginia wins bid to host 'The UCI World Championships 2015' – Cycling News
USA has managed to impress UCI as an announcement has been made that Richmond, Virginia will host the 2015 Road World Championships. The race will be organised in September and all the main events will be included. It has been a while since World Championships
were held in the USA as it was back in 1986 when Colorado hosted the event.
Richmond’s Mayor was overwhelmed by the decision as he said, “Richmond is thrilled to be selected to host the 2015 road world cycling championships, joining a list of great cities like Madrid, Florence and Copenhagen.” Dwight C. Jones further added that
he has given a special focus to cycling for sport and for travelling during his government. The opportunity of organising the most esteemed cycling event in his city is a big moment for his administration.
There have been some outstanding cyclists from America who has secured many titles in the sport including 14 World Championships. Some of the big names in American cycling include Greg LeMond, Lance Armstrong, Amber Neben, Taylor Phinney and Kristin Armstrong.
It has been 25-years since the race has held in the country and organisers have done a good job in winning the bid to host the event.
Taylor Phinney who has been the Road and Track Race World Champions on many occasions believes that having the World Championships in his country will certainly help the new talent. He stated, “The road world championships have not been held on American
soil in my lifetime and it will certainly give me, and the entire new generation of American cycling something to aspire to."
Mike Plant is a member of the UCI Management Committee and played an important role in arranging the World Championships to the United States. He mentioned that it is a big achievement to bring the Championships back not only in the US but also in Richmond.
He further added that it is the ideal place to hold the event and it has been proven before during the Tour de Trump and Tour DuPont.
The news of USA holding the World Championships 2015 was confirmed in a UCI press release as Pat McQuaid, UCI President has welcomed the decision. UCI confirms that Quebec and Muscat were also interested to host the event in 2015. Quebec pulled itself out
in March 2011 where as Muscat has also withdrawn their bid and hence Richmond will host the event in 2015.
