What magnitude of seismic energy does '1' represent on the scale ? I know that every two points represent a 1000-fold increase - but from what initial magnitude ?

  1. Recordable but not felt!  Seismic devices will record one's but you won't know it happened!  I don't think you feel or hear anything below a 3 or so!  And I believe that each point is an order of magnitude larger! (1-2, 2-3, 3-4 etc) is 1000 times stronger than the previous level.

  2. 1 is a micro-earthquake not felt but recorded
