Rick Adelman wants $25 million for five years with the Minnesota Timberwolves: NBA Report
The Minnesota Timberwolves head coaching saga has taken another twist as it has been learnt that the former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman, the man who is the favourite to take over as the head coach of the twin city franchise,
is demanding a whooping 25 million dollars for a five year stint.
Adelman has linked to the Timberwolves job for a long time now, but according to sources, reason behind not reaching a contract is that Adelman had demanded five million dollars for a year and a five year contract from the Wolves.
This has put Minnesota’s major stake owner Glen Taylor and their President of Basketball Operations, David Kahn under the pump.
Wolves are not amongst the richest teams of the National Basketball Association and if they do hire Adelman, Glen Taylor will have to dig deep in his pocket. Moreover, Taylor still has to pay previous coach Kurt Rambis 4 million
dollars, as there were still two years left on his contract with the Wolves.
So, if Taylor signs Adelman then he would have to spend $7 million on coaches per year until July 2103. In addition to that, there is not even a single player on Minnesota’s roster, who is having a $5 million annual contract and
that to for five consecutive years. Yes, that’s true not even Kevin Love gets that much.
However, the kind of record Adelman possess can entice any one. Adelman has made it into 16 playoffs during his 20 seasons as a coach. Additionally, he also shares good relation with the franchise hero Kevin Love through his son
and his appointment may help Minnesota in signing Love for long-term.
This is the not the first time however that Minnesota will be paying that much amount to a coach. Minnesota paid their former coach Flip Saunders nearly $5 million per year during his last few seasons with the team. Still $25 million
for five years is a huge commitment with Don Nelson waiting in the wings; the Wolves do have a plan B.
Nelson is the second option after Adelman for the Wolves, one because he has the necessary experience that Taylor and Kahn are looking for and secondly, he would only cost them $10 million and that too for three years.
Don is one of the most revered coaches in the league and over the years, he has made a niche for himself with his innovative ideas. It was Nelson, who introduced the point forward position in basketball for the first time and teams
and this position has now become an important part of team strategies nowadays.
Sam Mitchell is another option that has been in the loop and as such with reports of a huge salary demands originating for the Rick Adelman camp, the Wolves may go for somebody else.
