Rick Nash makes equaliser as Columbus Blue Jackets edge Calgary Flames in shootout 4-3 -NHL Update
Rick Nash miraculous made the equaliser during the final minute of game play during the third period along with the decider in the shootout to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Calgary Flames, 4-3, Thursday night, December 1, 2011, at the sold out
Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
For Columbus, this was certainly a big win since the Blue Jackets have not been able to counter back after falling below in the score late in a contest ever since the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicked off.
"We haven't come back from a game yet to win one on the road," Nash said. "It was a huge comeback. I don't think we've won (a shootout) this year yet. You're pretty lucky when you score one and win the shootout. You've got to give your goalie a lot of credit."
Antoine Vermette made the opening shot during the first five minutes of the opening period for his third of the season which was levelled by Calgary’s, Lee Stempniak, eight minutes later to force an intense second 20 minute round with both teams,1-1.
Rene Bourque made the tie-breaker for the home team with 19 seconds to go in the second period which gave the home crowd something to cheer about after sitting on the edge of their seats throughout.
The 19,000 crowd could not have been happier when Blake Comeau extended the lead with less than 15 minutes to go in the third and final period of regulation but as Nikita Nikitin brought Columbus back into the matchup with his first of the season and Rick
Nash equalised it at the 19:02 mark, it was a deep moment of silence throughout the stadium.
"You need your best players to be your best," Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. "Rick has the ability to get to those areas and he did a great job doing it. To have your top goal scorer to have a chance to win the hockey game like we had with Rick, that's
what you want."
Staying scoreless in overtime, Rick Nash potted the deciding goal on their final attempt as Curtis Sanford, goalie for Columbus, blocked all three shootout attempts on his net.
