Rick Nash takes top honours as NHL’s First Star of the Week
After a solid offensive showing, Columbus Blue Jackets winger Rick Nash has been named the National Hockey League’s first star for the week of 14 to 20 November.
NHL.com reports that the Blue Jackets’ captain led the way by scoring six goals, two of which were game-winners. In their first 18 games, the Jackets have posted a record
of 12-6-0, which stands as one of best starts in franchise history.
In their most recent game, the Jackets skated to a 3-0 shutout win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday 20 November. Nash provided all of the offence in that game, as he scored his fifth
career hat trick to seal the victory. Columbus plays their next game on Monday 22 November against the Nashville Predators.
The second star of the week was defenceman John-Michael Liles of the Colorado Avalanche. He put up two goals and five assists for seven points as the Avs went on a four-game winning streak.
Liles’ two goals game in a 4-3 overtime win over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday 17 November. He currently leads all Avalanche players in ice time (22:29), plus-minus (+11), and shots blocked (39). The Avs return to action on Wednesday 24 November, when they
visit the Vancouver Canucks.
Detroit Red Wings
rearguard
Brian Rafalski was the third star, posting seven assists in only three games. Rafalski earned three assists in a 5-4 overtime victory against the Calgary Flames on Sunday 21 November,
one of which was his 400th career assist. The three assists matched a career high for the veteran defenceman. Detroit is currently sitting in first place in the Western Conference after posting a record of 13-3-2, and they are scheduled to face the Atlanta
Thrashers on Wednesday 24 November.
