Rick Porcello helps Detroit Tigers outclass Chicago White Sox 7-1 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued their impressive winning streak as they annihilated the Chicago White Sox 7-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, July 21 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The White Sox were the first to get onto the board, thanks to left-fielder Dayan Viciedo who earned an RBI single to right in the fifth inning to break the deadlock. Austin Jackson responded for the Tigers with an RBI double to deep right-centre.
Brennan Boesch has raised the level of his game-play considerably over the last few weeks. He hit a three run home-run to right in the sixth inning to extend Tigers’ lead to 5-1. Jackson, Jhonny Peralta, Gerald Laird and second baseman Danny Worth combined
to end the contest on a high note for the Tigers.
Starting pitcher Rick Porcello showed just what he is capable of as he pitched eight effective innings. Striking-out four while giving up just five hits and a run, he grabbed his seventh win of the season.
"On paper, you can say whatever you want, but if you don't perform on the field then it means nothing," Porcello said. "We all believed in each other, and we've still got a lot of work to do. This isn't over yet. This is just getting started."
"I know in my case, if I have two outs and the guy gets a big hit or something like that, that's the dagger," Porcello said. "It's one of the worst things you can go through. ... Our offense, the way they've been playing is really nice."
The Tigers have looked like a completely different team after the All Star Break. With eight wins in their last ten games, there has been a definite shift in momentum for Jim Leyland and company.
Beating their American League Central Division rivals in the first two games of this series, the Tigers have now grabbed the top spot on the league standings and it will be very interesting to see if they can maintain their excellent form over a long period
of time to reach the playoffs for the second straight season.
