Rick Porcello ineffective as Detroit Tigers lose to Chicago White Sox 1-6 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were outclassed by the Chicago White Sox 1-6 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Monday, September 10 in the opening game of their four match series.
It was a huge loss for the Tigers who are looking to claim their second straight American League Central Division title. After taking the loss, the Tigers have now moved three games behind the leaders Chicago White Sox.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Rick Porcello was hit hard in his five plus innings as he gave up five hits and four runs to take his 12th loss of the season. Relief pitcher Octavio Dotel was also hit hard, conceding two hits and two runs. He will be
looking to regroup himself and bounce back strongly in his next appearance.
"When you get in a tough situation like that, you've got to bear down and find something within to get out of those jams. I wasn't able to do that," Porcello said
For the White Sox, starter Jose Quintana pitched seven plus effective innings to make quick work of Tigers’ batting line-up.
Jhonny Peralta singled to deep left in the second inning to give Tigers the early 1-0 lead. However, apart from Peralta none of the Tigers’ hitters could find scoring ways. White Sox scored four runs in the sixth inning, thanks to Alex Rios and A.J. Pierzynski
who hit back-to-back home-runs. Gordon Beckham also made his presence felt with a home-run to left in the eighth inning.
"As soon as he got that double play, he settled down. It was the biggest play of the game," Pierzynski said.
He added, "He (Cabera) is probably the best hitter in baseball right now. You could see Q's confidence grow and you kind of see the team's confidence grow. ...This is probably the biggest game he ever pitched in his life."
Tigers will be looking to put things back on the right track in Game 2 to keep their playoffs hopes alive. It will be interesting to see if Manager Jim Leyland and company can learn from their mistakes to avoid another embarrassing loss at the hands of their
AL Central Division rivals.
