Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and three others leading the Kolon Korea Open through the halfway mark
The leaderboard of the Kolon Korea Open on OneAsia Tour turned out to be an unusually crowded one at the top, where no fewer than five players shared the lead of the KRW1,000,000,000 event. Asian and European players seems to be locked down in a tight battle
for the summit as Rory McIlroy, Y.E Yang, Rickie Fowler, Mo Joong-kyung, and Bronson La'Cassie, players from four different continents wrestled their way up the leaderboard.
All five players are now settled for an aggregate score of 137, with Mo carding the lowest second round of 66 of all the five players at the Woo Jeong Hills Country Club. Mo, who is pitched at Number 10 spot on the Money List on Korean Tour, pulled in a
blistering eagle to push for the summit through the halfway mark. He said, “I’ve been hitting the ball well lately and the putter came round this week, so I am pretty comfortable with my game.”
The 28-year-old Australian golfer, La'Cassie, also broke the headlines in the start-studded event in Korea on the second day, carding a round of 67. La'Cassie made it into the Korean Open through his strong performance in last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links
Championship, where he played all through the weekend. His strongest finish for the year came at the Indonesia Open in July, where he finished for a joint 14th.
La’Cassie said, “I played pretty solid and I haven’t done that much wrong. I’ve kept the ball on the right side of the hole and I am in a good position. There is still a long way to go. I played pretty well last week.”
McIlroy has done well for the moment carding rounds of 68 and 69 so far. Ranked at Number Three position in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), he is the highest ranked player in the event and he comes with a good track record on Korean turf. He finished
for a joint third in 2009, while he was playing as a rookie on the tour. McIlroy said, “It was a good round. I felt it could have been lower, but I played solid golf and holed some nice putts.”
It is not just McIlroy who has a liking for Asian turf. Fowler, who started off with an equally bright opening in his professional career alongside McIlroy, but is still in search of his maiden victory, carded a round of 70 against his much better round
of 67 the previous day, to stay in contention for the title.
