Rickie Fowler confident for a fourth major victory for the United States in a row
Rickie Fowler is eager to extend the 15 new major winners’ streak to 16 with a win at the British Open at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, slated to start from Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Yet, it is not the 15 new major winners that are attracting him. In fact, it is the Americans who have succeeded in taking the last three major championships home.
In 2011, Keegan Bradley won the PGA Championship, followed by Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson winning the Masters Tournament and US Open in 2012, respectively.
Therefore, it made Fowler even hungrier for a win in golf’s one of the biggest events of the year.
"It's been a lot of fun to watch guys like that winning their first majors," the 23-year-old Californian said. "But it's also been a kick in the butt to get out and make me want it more. It is fun to watch them win but at the same time you'd rather be there
than them".
Currently, he is enjoying the best of his form, as he won the Wells Fargo Championship as his first PGA Tour victory. Thereafter, he also tied for the second place at The Players Championship, and stood fifth at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Therefore, he can be a strong contender at the third major event of the year. Last year, he tied for the fifth position after a strong finish on the weekend. According to him, he likes the links course at Lancashire and is happy to return to the field this
year.
However, he also admitted that the course has narrowed down and has become really difficult to play on because of the increased number of bunkers and the thickness of the roughs.
"There may be fewer options here this week because of how narrow the course is, how much rough there is and how many bunkers (more than 200) there are but there is definitely going to be some shot-making," said Fowler."You can be as creative as you want
and hit a variety of shots throughout the round".
Fowler will tee off at 2:32 pm local time on Thursday for the opening round.
