Rickie Fowler eyeing a spot for the Ryder Cup this year following his maiden win at Wells Fargo Championship
Young Rickie Fowler, often touted as the Rory McIlroy of the farther side of the Atlantic, is now contemplating a spot in the coveted Ryder Cup this year, after landing his first PGA Tour title at Wells Fargo Championship this month.
Fowler, who joined the PGA Tour in the year 2010 through a joint 15th on the Qualifying School, has been lurking in shadows for quite a while and eventually clinched his first PGA Tour title this year.
The young rookie posted some stellar finishes in his debut year but was deprived of a win by the raging PGA Tour players.
A Walker Cup hero in 2009 where he won all four rounds in the event, Fowler stepped on the PGA Tour with considerable aplomb but succumbed to form vows earlier in the professional career.
With his latest victory on the mainstream PGA, Fowler is now hoping to make his way in the Ryder Cup this year.
He said, "I really had three main goals coming into this year: First win, making it to the Tour Championship and making the Ryder Cup. Still focusing on those and have some fun. If I win, that gets me to Tour Championship for the most part, and play well from there, and have a chance at Ryder Cup".
Meanwhile, Captain Davis Love III is already in a fix as some 11 top-ranked Americans have won at least once on the tour this season, making it all the more difficult for the Captain to make a reasonable choice.
Love, however, is confident that the recent rise of American golf will contribute a lot towards a stunning performance at Medinah Country Club in September this year.
He said, “We're going to have a lot of good, young guys, which is nice, and they are going to fight it out. I hope they keep making the putts they've been making".
Young Fowler was able to break into the top-25 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in his professional career when he landed the title on the second Playoff hole, defeating his nemesis Rory McIlroy and D. A. Points.
Fowler also posted a strong runner up finish at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, his fifth second place finish in his juvenile career so far and will need at least one more title in order to debut in the Ryder Cup this year.
