Rickie Fowler on a rampage at Kolon Korea Open in search of his maiden victory – Golf news
Young Rickie Fowler wreaked havoc on third day of the Kolon Korea Open to edge past rest of the field by a whooping lead of four shots. Searching for his maiden victory, Fowler has done everything right so far in the event and will be heading into the final
round of the event with a strong lead.
Carding rounds of 67 and 70 on the previous days at the Woo Jeong Hills Country Club, Fowler pulled in a glamorous round to grab the lead at the OneAsia event on the third day. He carded eight birdies to stay clear of the overnight co-leaders, Y.E Yang and
Rory McIlroy. He is now 13-under, 200 on the aggregate.
Yang, who has won the home event three times in the past, is hoping to retain the title he won last year. Starting off with a bogey on the fourth hole, Yang quickly reverted to defensive putting and pulled in six birdies before dropping another shot at the
17th. Yang is standing at nine-under, 204 on the aggregate, trailing Fowler by four shots.
He will need to put in extraordinary effort on the final day in order to retain the title. The 39-year-old Yang is quite capable of turning the tables at the last moment, considering last year’s victory when he recovered from a deficit of 10-shots in the
final round to lift the title.
Meen-Whee Kim, another South Korean, has now soared to an outright third spot with his round of 66 on the third day followed by Bronson La’ Cassie of Australia, who is now sharing fourth place with McIlroy.
The US Open champion had the worst day of the event on Saturday, when he found water and roughs on several of his wayward tee shots. Starting off from back nine, he conceded two bogeys before falling for a traumatic double-bogey at par-four, 14th.
He again dropped a shot at 16th and finally broke the bogey-spree to card two consecutive birdies.
He was visibly shaken by the sloppy work on the back nine and decided not to take any more risks on the front nine. He started opening up a little towards the end and pulled in two birdies but again fell in for a bogey at the penultimate hole.
If Fowler goes over to win the event, it will be his first victory after he turned professional in 2009. Fowler and McIlroy were part of the Walker Cup in 2009, where the American team took over the European Team to lift the title.
