Rickie Fowler struggling with back problem
Rickie Fowler has had a terrific 2012 season, as he has been extremely consistent with his performance, missing just three cuts this season. However, after a long and tiring season, his back is giving him some issues.
The American has been having back spasms for a long time now.
This year has been very special for Rickie, as he won his first PGA Tour and nearly missed out on the spot for this year’s Ryder Cup.
The world number thirty had a magnificent first half of the season, as he won the Wells Fargo Championship and finished second at the Players Championship.
However, he could not carry on his excellent run of form going into the US Open, as he finished way below—at T41.
Since his disappointing performance at the US Open, the American has struggled on the course and people started doubting his desire and character — but what they did not know was that, Fowler has been struggling with a severe back spasms since the US Open.
“I’ve always dealt with some lower back [issues],” he revealed.
“Obviously I put a lot of stress on my body. Just got into a couple of bad habits where I was putting a little too much stress on it and it flared up. It just became a bit of a problem. I wanted to play through FedEx Cup and make the Ryder Cup, but obviously
didn’t play as well as I wanted to”.
After the Tour Championship, things started to become worse for Fowler and it was difficult for him to withstand the pressure on his back. He took an eight-week rest in order to fix his back, as he withdrew from the events overseas.
“The harder and longer the swing – like driver and 3-wood – were usually the ones that would bother it more,” he said.
With a bigger club, more pressure is applied on the back, especially lower back. The disks are really grinded while hitting with drivers and woods. Irons usually do not put much pressure on the lower back, as swing does not require power.
Fowler claims that he played in the World Challenge just to test his back and weather it is fit enough for a full season or not.
