Rickie Fowler wins Wells Fargo Championship for the first time in his career – Golf News
Rickie Fowler birdied the first extra hole in the playoffs at the Wells Fargo Championship to finally record his first ever PGA Tour victory, on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
Fowler went one up after carding a birdie on the par-three second hole at Quail Hollow Country Club, while three birdies between the fifth and eighth hole allowed him to make a comeback in the game.
At the end of the front nine, he was one-under, as he carded another bogey on the ninth hole.
Later, he managed to score three birdies and a lone bogey on the back nine to record a three-under par 69 to share the top position with Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points.
The game was then stretched into the playoffs where Fowler succeeded in outshining his rivals on the very first hole.
“I was swinging really well all day, and coming down the last few holes, I finally got a glimpse of the leaderboard and knew about where I stood. I didn't want to get a peek of it if I was leading, but it was nice to see that I was tied at the time and knew
what was going on. So it was kind of a battle down the finish,” he said.
He also showed his interest in playing against McIlroy in different tournaments around the world.
"I'm looking forward to playing with Rory for a long time," He said. "It's awesome. It's a long wait, but well worth it".
Fowler has been playing excellently in the last few months. The highlights of the season includes his tied for the seventh position in the Honda Classic and tied for the 10th place in the last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
In the meantime, Webb Simpson, who lives within a walking distance from the venue of the tournament, faltered in the final round and carded a one-over par 73.
He mixed three birdies with four bogeys to take the fourth position on the leaderboard. He was disappointed, as he could capitalise on a superb performance in the first three rounds.
