Ricky Berens acquires Men’s 100m freestyle gold: Day one – Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool
Ricky Berens of USA dictated terms to his challengers by acquiring gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle on foremost day of the 2011 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Atlanta on Friday, December 16.
The 23-year-old Berens faced severe challenge from his team-mate, Garrett Weber Gale and Vladimir Morozov of Russia in the final round.
Weber Gale emerged as the top contender for gold medal in the first round, where he ended his first round with a top finest time of 22.32 seconds. Morozov emerged as the second best swimmer of the race as he remained 0.34 seconds behind Weber Gale and posted
a time of 22.66 seconds for initial 50 metres of the swim.
Berens occupied third fastest spot of the race as he concluded his initial round of the swim by submitting an effort of 22.77 seconds.
The tables turned in the second round, where Berens elevated his efforts to ensure his top finish on the medal rostrum. With his persistent efforts, he ended his final half of the race with time of 23.83 seconds to post 46.60 seconds on the board for gold
medal.
His title claiming effort remained 1.66 seconds behind the world record of 44.94 seconds, owned by Amaury Leveaux of France from December 2008. He was also 1.52 seconds away from improving the American mark of 45.08 seconds, held by Nathan Adrian of USA
from December 2009.
The champion was followed by Weber Gale, who covered his final 50 metres of the swim with an effort of 24.47 seconds to submit 46.79 seconds on the bulletin for silver medal. He was chased by Morozov, who remained nearly half a second behind him and reached
the podium for bronze medal.
Morozov ended his final half of the race with an effort of 24.55 seconds to post 47.21 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, the session came to an end after the conclusion of all scheduled events in Men’s and Women’s corner whereas the podium scores were invited on the victory stand for their irresistible efforts in the freestyle discipline after the conclusion of
session.
