Ricky Berens dominates Men’s 200m freestyle heats: Day two – 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim

Ricky Berens of Trojan Swim Club dominated the qualification rounds of the Men’s 200m freestyle on day two of the 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte on Friday, May 11.
The 24-year-old Berens served notice of his talent as he sprinted his way towards the finishing end to prove himself a top contender for the gold medal.
With his impeccable effort, he faced no trouble from his challengers and proved his mettle for the top qualification spot of the event. He gained a comfortable lead over his challengers in the first lap as he touched the wall with the timing of 25.27 seconds.
His effort was followed by Charlie Houchin of Unattached-NC, who was almost 1.50 seconds apart and covered the equivalent distance with the timing of 26.63 seconds.
Berens continued his smothering efforts in the second lap, where he extended his lead to almost two body lengths and submitted a time of 53.01 seconds. On the other hand, Houchin suffered a deficit of 2.17 seconds from his foregoing finisher and reported a time of 55.18 seconds.
The arena saw elevated efforts of Berens in the third lap of the swim, where he geared up his pace and strengthened his position for the top fastest finish by posting a time of 1 minute and 21.55 seconds.
His effort remained almost 1.50 seconds faster from Houchin, who ended his initial 150 metres of the swim by submitting a time of 1 minute and 23.14 seconds. Houchin remained almost one and a half body length behind his strongest challenger as he tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 23.14 seconds.
Finally, Berens dominated the final lap of the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 50.39 seconds. He was followed by Houchin, who ended his swim in second best place by producing 1 minute and 50.71 seconds.
Third qualifying position was secured by Ryan Lochte of Daytona Beach-FL, who clocked 1 minute and 50.74 seconds.
Furthermore, the session ended after the completion of all planned events in Men and Women’s category.
