Ricky Burns gets WBO Championship as Manuel Marquez vacates it – Boxing news
Ricky Burns received the WBO world lightweight championship belt, vacated by the Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez to move up to the welterweight division.
And therefore, Ricky Burns now stands as the official WBO Champion who will be defending his title in a bout against Paulus Moses at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow on March 10.
Ricky Burns, who won his interim title when he defeated the Australian fighter Michael Katsidis in November at the Wembley Arena, expressed his joy saying, “When I beat Katsidis I felt like a world champion anyway. But this makes it all real and I'm thrilled
with the news that I'm now the official full world champion. It's a great feeling, but now it's now back to reality and training hard for what will be a tough title defence against Moses in my Scottish homecoming on March 10. For the last 10 years I've been
grafting away in my career, but in the last couple of years it has really taken off with me beating [Roman] Martinez and then beating a great warrior like Katsidis to put me up with the best in the world.”
Currently, Ricky and Nathan Cleverly are the only two world champions hailing from Britain. Nathan Cleverly is the light heavyweight champion whereas Burns is now the WBO champion.
Asserting his views on Nathan, the new WBO champion said that Nathan has always been a great fighter and that it feels extremely good to see two world champions from Britain now.
Ricky Burns is a Scottish boxer hailing from Coatbridge. He is a former Commonwealth super featherweight champion and WBO Super-Featherweight champion. After a rough career start, Burns quickly moved up the ladders making his way among the best fighters
of the world.
Today, he has accomplished what he has always deserved; the WBO championship belt. Burns is proud to be the second British champion in the world and he thinks, he along with Nathan, will proudly hoist his country’s flag at every stage of the world. Not only
for his country, Burns is excited for himself too, since the championship was his foremost milestone to achieve.
