Ricky Burns retains title by unanimously nailing Paulus Moses - Boxing news
Ricky Burns, the Scottish prospect with an intimidating resume, successfully defended his interim WBO lightweight gold by collecting a unanimous win over Namibian lightweight proud, Paulus Moses, in a 12-round skirmish.
The engagement headlined the 11-bout pay-per-view organised and compiled by Frank Warren and was televised on Saturday March 10, 2012. The ring for the brawl was set up at Braehead Arena situated in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. The event was co-headlined
by the 10-round skirmish between Paul Appleby and Stephen Ormond.
Ricky and Mosses, both are equally competent and talented pugilists who rule the lightweight division emphatically. Moses, the former WBA world lightweight champion, was entering in his career’s 30th bout. The Namibian number one boasts 28 wins and a huge
19 of them by knockout.
Paulus, widely known as ‘The Hitman’, is famous for his lethal, jaw-breaking jabs that can easily knockout an opponent’s senses. Even Ricky, after the bout, admitted the sheer power behind Moses’ each and every punch. Burns commented, “I could see how he
had 19 knockouts from his 28 wins. He could punch. A few times he caught me on the shoulder, the same spot. My left arm was dead.”
During the whole bout, the ring felt the intimidating presence of Moses only and Ricky was nowhere to be found. All the critics later on mentioned that they noticed a clear deficiency in Burns brawling adding that he did not perform as per the expectations.
From the very first round Moses gave a real tough time to the young Ricky.
In the first round, Ricky did throw impressive jabs but they were equally answered by the 33-year-old Moses. In the ninth round Moses even pierced Ricky’s defence and connected a powerful fist to his chin. Ricky got startled but instantly held his ground
and kept on brawling.
The designated 12 rounds ended and the three assigned judges, John Stewart, Jose Ignacio Martinez, and Phil Edwards allocated 111-117, 110-120, and 110-119 respectively to Ricky hence officially denoting him as the unanimous winner.
Ricky, former WBO super featherweight champion, after the huge win, stated, “I was just trying to pepper it out and keep my distance. My trainer, Billy Nelson, told me to keep my chin down and that was good advice. I’m just glad I got the win.”
According to the recent tidings, Ricky will most probably take on Kevin Mitchell in his next engagement. Ricky now has 34 wins out of a total 36 encounters and Moses has collected his career’s second defeat.
