Ricky Ellis and Myles Brown clinch gold medals: African Senior Championships - Recap
Rickey Ellis and Myles M Brown of RSA-ZZ clinched gold medals of the Men’s 100m backstroke and 1500m freestyle on day six of the 11th African Senior Swimming Championships 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday, September 15.
The 24-year-old Ellis stayed considerably ahead of his closest competitors and occupied gold medal of the discipline. With his unrelenting efforts, Ellis enjoyed a full body length lead over his toughest challenger as he hit the wall with a timing of 57.75
seconds.
The champion was followed by Taki Mrabet of TUNIS-ZZ, who stayed 1.01 seconds slower and stepped on the medal rostrum for silver medal by clocking a time of 58.76 seconds.
Mrabet was chased by Michael J Meyer of RSA-ZZ, who stayed 0.66 seconds apart and proved his mettle for third best spot of the race by submitting a time of 59.42 seconds.
Mrabet was trailed by Omar Abo EL Soud of EGY-ZZ, who stayed marginally slower from him over the finishing end and settled on the wall as fourth best finisher by reporting a time of 59.56 seconds.
Fifth position of the race was secured by Naoufel Benabid of ALGE-ZZ, who stayed 0.46 seconds behind and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 00.02 seconds.
Following that, Brown stifled hopes of his opponents by capturing the title of 1500m discipline. With his gruelling efforts in the distant event, Brown enjoyed an advantage of almost 21 seconds and tapped the wall for gold medal with an effort of 16 minutes
and 04.69 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Ali Morsy Marwan Ahmed of EGY-ZZ, who remained considerably slower from his former finisher and touched the wall for silver medal with an effort of 16 minutes and 25.48 seconds.
Ahmed was chased by Pedro Pinotes of ANG-ZZ, who was 20.12 seconds apart and secured bronze medal of the race with an effort of 16 minutes and 45.60 seconds.
Fourth position of the event was obtained by Hossam Khaled Youssef of EGY-ZZ, who settled on the wall with a timing of 17 minutes and 09.36 seconds.
Last event of the day was Women’s 400m Medley Relay, where the relay squad of RSA-ZZ showed no mercy to their opponents and occupied gold medal of the event with an effort of 4 minutes and 18.31 seconds.
They were followed by the relay team of EGY-ZZ, which stayed nearly 11 seconds apart and occupied silver medal of the event by producing an effort of 4 minutes and 29.08 seconds.
Third position of the race was obtained by ALGE-ZZ that remained almost 4.50 seconds behind and posted a time of 4 minutes and 34.61 seconds.
Furthermore, Ellis and Brown were happy with their title claiming efforts and collected medals at the victory ceremony of the event.
