Ricky Hatton looking for raw boxing talent in Asia – Boxing News
Former Briton welterweight titlist Ricky Hatton is looking for boxing talent in Asia, hoping that he would find some that would surprise the world. Hatton is a former light-welterweight titlist who tried to revive his career last year but failed miserably.
Now, it seems like Hatton wants to promote young talent instead of bragging about himself.
“This is such a successful, big part of the world and nobody here does boxing, so that's the whole purpose of us coming here,” said Hatton while he was in Hong Kong. Hatton staged a huge night of boxing in Asia-Pacific last week under Hatton promotions.
The agency has now set up an office in the southern Chinese city, hoping to find talent to surprise the world.
“The law of averages says there must be some talent out here somewhere and I'd like to raise the profile of boxing out here,” he added.
“Boxing is a massive passion for me and there's nothing I'd like better than to be the first promoter to bring a world champion through to this part of the world, to give people someone to be proud of, like the fans were of me.”
Hatton went head to head against Vyacheslav Senchenko last year hoping to revive his career. However, the Briton could not do much but take consistent beating for Senchenko and lose the showdown via knockout victory.
Hatton first retired when he lost via second round knockout to Filipino fight king Manny Pacquiao back in 2009. It was a devastating loss for Hatton which made him take up a life of depression and alcoholism. However, the Briton recovered soon enough from
the curse to make his way back to the ring.
Hatton stands as one of the most prominent British boxers in the history of the sport. His popularity, even today, is unmatched. During his last match against Senchenko, Hatton lost yet the crowd cheered for him as he was the one who was victorious.
His legacy still stands as a grand one for others to follow, especially in his country where people believe boxing as a sport is fading off.
