Ricky Hatton not facing Paul Malignaggi anymore – Boxing News
The return of the former WBA, IBF & The Ring Light Welterweight Champion and WBA Welterweight Champion Ricky Hatton will not be as exciting as it was being considered, since his probable opponent Paul Malignaggi, the current WBA welterweight champion, has
decided to defend his title against Pablo Cesar Cano on October 20.
Hatton’s career came to a halt when Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao knocked him out brutally in the second round in May 2009. Hatton, who hails from Britain, went into retirement, facing several depressive moments alongside.
Earlier this year, Hatton decided to make a comeback and for some reason Paul Malignaggi was being speculated as his possible opponent. Last week on Wednesday, an announcement stated that Hatton was planning a two-fight return. His first fight would be against
Malignaggi in three month’s time while his second opponent was still to be decided.
As of now, Ricky Hatton’r agent Paul Speak has confirmed that the Brit has not yet decided on a comeback. However, he did admit the fact that Paul Malignaggi is now going to fight Cano in New York on the undercard of Danny Garcia vs. Erik Morales.
Hatton was once among the top-notch fighters of the division and so he will never fall short on opponents. However, fighting Malignaggi could have saved his career, only if he could have won. Now, Hatton might just need to find another opponent who is popular
enough to life Hatton’s career once again.
There are rumours now that Hatton might consider going head to head against Briton fighter Amir Khan. The former WBA and IBF unified champion lost his titles to Lamont Peterson last year in December. He regained the WBA title following Peterson’s failed
drug test but lost it again to Danny Garcia this year in July.
Amir Khan has previously admired Ricky Hatton for his fighting capabilities, believing that the veteran fighter is doing the right thing by making a comeback. Khan is in full support of Hatton’s return believing that the fellow countryman still has a lot
in him left to offer to the sport. Khan believes Hatton’s comeback will be a push to British boxing, which is indeed needed right now.
