Ricky Hatton publicly apologizes for fall from grace
Last week, it was made apparent to the public that British boxing star Ricky Hatton has a problem with substance abuse. The former IBF junior welterweight champion apologized in his first TV interview, saying that “sorry is not a big enough word” for his
recent actions.
Details of his state started to emerge after News of the Week published an online article containing a video depicting the fighter using cocaine in a hotel bathroom. The video was criticized by many, including big-time British boxing promoter Frank
Warren.
Hatton checked into a rehabilitation centre last Monday.
The interview, which appeared on Britain’s Daybreak show, featured Hatton admitting he began “dabbling” in drugs after a series of “humiliating” defeats by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
Hatton said, “I couldn't show my face for months and months on end. I was suffering really, really badly so even though I always used to have a drink, I started drinking a little bit more.” He continued, “...things got on top of me and slowly just went from
bad to worse and it ended up resulting in dabbling in other silly things […] I've upset my fans, my family, everybody that has been with me from day one. Sorry is not a big enough word for what I want to say to them... I've been in such a low place, such a
bad place I couldn't tell you.”
Hatton will meet with the British police, regarding the incident in question, following his time in rehab.
When asked if he had ever ‘dabbled’ in substances during the tenure of his boxing career, he adamantly replied that he had not.
Hatton’s father recently said that even before the incident he was looking into rehabilitating measures for his son, who had gained a significant amount of weight recently, and had displayed symptoms of depression.
