Ricky Hatton reckons Amir Khan will trouble Floyd Mayweather – Boxing news
Former British professional boxer, Ricky ‘the Hitman’ Hatton, who is a two-time International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organisation light welterweight champion, believes the currently unified World Boxing Association Super and International
Boxing Federation Light Welterweight Champion, Amir Khan, will give Floyd Mayweather trouble, if the two ever meet in the ring.
Hatton said in a Telegraph Sports interview, “Amir has that in-out style which could give Mayweather problems.”
The undefeated American legend, Mayweather, who is a five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, is planning to fight on May 5, 2012 and Khan, who is more commonly known as King Khan, is keen to have a clash
with him.
Hatton, who is currently working as a promoter, tasted defeat for the first time in his professional career when he fought Mayweather in their highly anticipated fight for the IBO and The Ring Light Welterweight titles back in December 2007 at the MGM Grand
Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Therefore, he knows it is not easy to beat the American superstar in the ring yet he believes the Bolton’s finest, Khan, stands a chance against Mayweather.
“Floyd likes fighters coming straight at him, and Amir has the style to challenge Floyd. I'm not saying he would beat Floyd, but I think he has a good chance against him,” Hatton added.
The 24-year-old Khan, who holds a record of winning 26 of his 27 professional fights, with 18 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, is considered as the best in the British pound-for-pound rankings and Hatton admitted he is a big fan of Khan.
“He (Khan) has become a formidable boxer... I'm a huge fan of Amir and how much hard work he has put into his career in to trying to get to the top of the sport,” Hatton said.
Khan is currently set to face Lamont Peterson on December 10, 2011 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C but he will then move up to 147 pounds division in order to set up some big fights and his prime target is Mayweather. So let’s
see if these two somehow sign a contract as their fight will certainly be an explosive one.
