Ricky Hatton stripped of boxing licenses
Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton has been hit by the British Boxing Board of Control and stripped of three boxing licenses, following revelations that cast his life in depression and substance abuse.
Hatton, 31, was stripped of his boxing, manager, and trainer certificates by the board, who first caught wind of Hatton’s personal difficulties after
News of the Week published a video of him doing cocaine almost two weeks ago.
Hatton retained his promotional license, which allows him to continue promoting boxing fights in Britain.
“The board is especially concerned to keep the sport of boxing free from drugs, whether taken for recreational or performance enhancing reasons and to be vigilant in identifying and dealing with cases
of alcohol abuse. At the hearing, the board found Ricky Hatton guilty of misconduct in that his actions and behaviour were detrimental to the interests of boxing and to the public interest and that he had brought the sport into disrepute,” read the board's
official statement.
In addition Hatton was fined £20,000 by the board.
The board ruled that Hatton could keep his promotional license and top spot at Hatton Promotions because the company involves a large organization of people with different positions, and the board felt
it unnecessary to affect others by ejecting Hatton.
In 47 professional fights, Hatton boasts two defeats, one of which came from number one rated Manny Pacquiao, and another from number two rated Floyd Mayweather Jr. Hatton went ten rounds with Mayweather
and was knocked out in the second round of his last bout with Manny Pacquiao. Since then he has said that he fell into depression in part due to the humiliating defeat, and ballooned in weight as well.
Since Hatton’s personal life has come to the fore, the fighter has enlisted the services of a rehabilitation center mainly for alcohol abuse. He has publicly apologized to all his fans and expressed his
“disappointment” in himself for recent activities.
