Ricky Hatton’s father says he may return to ring
Ricky Hatton Sr. has revealed that his son, a former boxing champion, may well return to the ring despite ongoing substance abuse problems.
Hatton Sr. confirmed recently that Hatton was “getting back to his old self” following a month stint in rehabilitation after a cocaine habit was revealed.
A video published by News of the Week originally found Hatton snorting the illegal substance in a hotel room. In subsequent statements he apologized for the incident and immediately entered rehab.
Following the news Hatton’s boxing licenses were stripped by the British Boxing Board of Control. The fighter was nevertheless permitted to maintain his role as one of the country’s leading boxing promoters.
Hatton Sr. told Sky Sports his son was “fine at the moment.” He continued: “He’s working out in his home gym and he's actually coming into the gym and working out every day alongside the other boxers.”
In his last professional bout Hatton was knocked out in the second round by superstar Manny Pacquiao. He attributes some of his personal problems to depression associated with the loss.
Hatton Sr. also spoke about Hatton’s reported weight-loss. The fighter made headlines recently when he gained as much as forty pounds following the Pacquiao bout. "As of today he's lost well over two stones (28 pounds), he's looking really good and very
relaxed,” Hatton Sr. confirmed. “He's getting back to his old self, his sense of humour's there and he's got that little spring in his step. I think working with some of the lads here and giving them a bit of advice and obviously he's feeling a bit fitter."
“The Hitman” has held belts from all of the major sanctioning bodies in boxing. He rose to stardom after he defeated Kostya Tsyzu at a time Tsyzu was considered one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world.
