Ricky Ponting anticipates end of ODI career – Cricket News Update
Following his axe from Australia’s ODI squad, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 is avoiding an official announcement of his retirement, and instead said that he had been dropped from the squad, and consequently did not see a future for himself in the limited-overs format of
the game anymore.
"I don't expect to play one-day international cricket for Australia anymore and I'm pretty sure the selectors don't expect to pick me either,” he said during a press conference.
He went on to explain that he did not feature anywhere in the panel’s future plans for the team.
"John (Inverarity, national selector) made it very clear to me yesterday the direction that they're heading with the one-day team and that I'm not part of their plans.”
The former skipper is considered as one of the top batsmen of Australia. His ODI career spans 375 matches, with a total score of 13,704 runs, which places him only one spot below http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, who is at the top of the list of ODI batting records. He
has also been part of three successful World Cup campaigns, two of which he spearheaded as captain.
However, despite his impressive past career, Ponting has failed to shine in the ongoing Commonwealth Bank series being held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. The 37-year-old has registered appalling single digit scores during the five matches he has played, with his highest
score being 7. As a result, he was dropped from the squad, with all-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558 returning to the team to take his place.
"I totally understand the reasons why, my performances over the last five games haven't warranted me being in the team,” he admitted, adding that the panel were keen on building a team for the 2015 World Cup, a process in which he was not included.
Despite the fact that his career in the shorter format of the game is drawing to a close, Punter expressed his aim to continue playing Test cricket, and has set his sights on the 2013 Ashes campaign in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013. This decision is undoubtedly underpinned by
his brilliant performance in Australia’s 4-0 whitewash in the Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 earlier this year.
