Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, has backed David Warner to come good in Test cricket as well and believes that the left-handed top-order batsman can be a genuine match-winner for the Kangaroos in the coming years.
The 26-year-old cricketer burst into the scene of international cricket in 2009, impressing one and all with his ability to strike the ball hard. Warner has played numerous match-winning knocks for the Baggy Greens in the shorter formats of the game and
was initially labelled as a limited-over specialist, not possessing the technique to deliver the goods in the 5-day format.
Having done well at the first-class level, the New South Welshman has gained the selectors’ confidence in Test cricket as well and has already played a couple of exceptional knocks. Warner however, has been under scrutiny in recent times, especially after
failing to make a contribution against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in the Brisbane Test.
He has been retained in the squad for the second Test and Ponting, his teammate and the former skipper, believes that the talented youngster has the ability to shine at the world-stage. The legendary batsman expressed that the critics had written-off Adam
Gilchrist also but the wicketkeeper/batsman proved that there is a lot of room for aggressive stroke-play in Test cricket as well.
“No-one probably thought that Gilly would have the temperament to be able to survive and make as many hundreds as he did in Test cricket. He found a way and he did it,” said the former Aussie captain. “Sure it's a little bit different for Dave because he's
an opening batsman in Test cricket.”
Ponting admits that the left-handed opener needs to adjust his game according to the different formats of the game but he is confident that Warner can contribute towards http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s success in future.
“What he has to be able to do is adapt himself very quickly from the changeover of formats. If he's playing well and hitting the ball in the middle of the bat, then he will set up a lot of Test wins for Australia in the future,” the great batsman added.
