Ricky Ponting escapes harsh punishment for breaking TV screen
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has succeeded in evading a harsh punishment by the International Cricket Council for breaking a television screen in the dressing room during the ICC World Cup 2011 match against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad.
Ponting was charged by the ICC after the cricketing body received an official complaint from the Ahmedabad cricket authorities.
The Aussie captain accepted his fault in front of the ICC authorities and offered to pay for the damages. Ponting’s acceptance to his mistake convinced the match referee Roshan Mahanama not to pursue the matter any further and deemed it appropriate to officially
reprimand him.
A statement released by Mahanama said, “Ricky knows that his action was in breach of the code, involving a brief moment of frustration. That said, it was clear that the damage he caused was purely accidental and without malice. He apologized shortly after
the incident at the ground and immediately agreed to pay for the damage.”
Ponting was charged under section 2.1.2 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct which relates to abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.
According to details, Ponting was furious after being run out against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 and was seen angrily talking to himself on his way back to the pavilion. When Ponting saw the replay of his run out on the television screen, he threw his protector towards his
bag but the protector ricocheted off the bag and hit the screen, damaging it from one side.
Ponting notified the team management immediately which informed the Gujarat Cricket Association about the incident. At that point, the GCA took the matter very seriously and were not happy by Ponting’s behaviour. It was also made clear by the Association
that they would report the matter to the ICC even after Ponting had apologised for the incident.
Ponting is now eligible to take part in Australia’s next World Cup match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 on Friday.
