Ricky Ponting has surgery??.??

Question

Ricky Ponting stepped straight off the plane and went to see his specialists.He was taken straight into surgery to repair the muscles around his tendon in his right wrist..

Australia are playing Bangledesh at the end of July in Darwin..

My question is -

Should Ricky play these 3 matches??

OR

Should he sit these ones out and recover properly for the Champions Trophy in September??..

I have had experience with this type of injury and it doesn't go away easy. It can take many months to heal satisfactorily, so it would be best if he took a few months to let it heal

My reading of this is that the amount of damage was more than expected. There has been soft tissue and tendon damage and that the decision as to whether he plays won't be known for a week or two.  Let's hope they don't rush him back even for the Champions Trophy, tendon problems can be very difficult to get right.

Australia's under 12's could probably beat Bangladesh, so there is no point in risking Ponting for a match which they dont need him! If it was an Ashes series or an Indian or South African series then maybe! BUT you will thrash Bangladesh with or without Ponting.

No, they shouldn't bring him back. Any further damage might end his career earlier than he planned.

It would not be for the long term benefit of Australian cricket if Ponting played those matches against Bangladesh at the end of July.

In fact you could argue that it is not for the long term benefit of Australian cricket to play Bangladesh at all. A complete and utter waste of time if you want my opinion.

Ponting should come back when he is ready, and not sit any deadlines. And if that means missing the matches against Bangladesh, and the Champions Trophy, so be it.

Australia do not want to be going into next years Ashes with a crocked captain. England are all too familiar with that situation.

Mind you, as Michael Vaughan is a man on borrowed time, one sliding stop in the outfield away from retirement, if Ponting does crock his wrist, we could end up with two non-playing captains for next years Ashes!

So no, Ponting should repair his wrist fully before returning to action.
