After showing a match-winning performance in the opening one-dayer against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, the Australian veteran, Ricky Ponting, has set sights on playing big innings consistently during the ongoing tour.
In the absence of the regular opening batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
Yet, that did not impose any pressure on the big man, as he batted beautifully and guided his side to 183 by clattering a 77-ball 63. He meanwhile, shared an excellent 102-run-partnerhip with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Clarke-c1978 who charmed 44 runs off 48 balls.
Ponting smashed nine lovely boundaries before being dismissed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DW-Steyn-c1409. Due to nonstop rain interruptions, The Proteas were given the target of 223 in 29 overs. However, they collapsed on 129 and tasted an embarrassing 93-run defeat (D/L method) in
the first One Day International (ODI) at Centurion on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.
For his brilliant batting performance in the rain-affect clash, Ponting was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’.
The Kangaroos are currently leading the series 1-0, with two more games to be played at Port Elizabeth and Durban respectively. After the three-match ODI series, the two teams are scheduled to meet in a couple of Test matches.
Ponting believes that since he has regained a bit of his form by playing a good innings in the first match, he will look to keep the fine work going during the rest of the battle against the South Africans.
“He’s a good judge then isn’t he. It wasn’t one of my best innings today ... but it was good to get some time in the middle. Hopefully that’s the start of a big tour for me,” said Ponting who has been feeling a lot comfortable after handing over the leadership
duties to his ex-deputy, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120.
Expecting great things from his predecessor, the present Aussie skipper had already made a prediction that the former skipper would finish the series as the highest run-getter. At the start of the series, he also shared that since Ponting is in terrific
touch these days, the experienced batsman will definitely scoop the ‘Player of Series’ award.
