Ricky Ponting not happy with the technology for low catches
Australian captain Ricky Ponting called the technology for resolving disputed low catches as “a plague on the game” as the first Test match of the Ashes ended up in a draw.
Ponting showed his disappointment about the technology as his appeal was dismissed when he scooped up a catch off England’s Alastair Cook , who already made a double century at that time at his ankle height.
Pakistani field umpire Aleem Dar and Billy Doctrove of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 referred to the third umpire, New Zealand’s Tony Hill who ruled out against Ponting citing the video as not clear.
Ponting, who was clearly annoyed, got into some heated words with the umpires but they did not seem to budge in.
Cook went on to make a record-breaking score of 235 not out as he steered the team to 517 for the loss of one wicket, setting a target of 297 for the Kangaroos.
The post-match conference saw a very infuriated Ponting who complained about the technology saying that he knew about the decision as soon as the field umpires called on for a review.
He said that he was always against the technology conceding that he “pleaded with every opposition captain around the world to take it out of the third umpire’s hands.” However, he admitted that he did not “get much support from the other captains with it”
and said that it annoys him and he believes that it is a “blight on the game” to trust a technology that is not good enough.
He said that he was “convinced he got Cook at that time and still is convinced” which just highlights the fact that the technology is not needed for the Ashes Test matches.
However, Cook said that he waited for the third umpire’s decision because he was “not sure” and “Ricky was not sure either.”
When asked whether Ponting would like to take England’s Captain Andrew Strauss into confidence to rule out the technology for the historic series, he resentfully replied that “it’s up to the umpires now who have set that standard and they have to make it
consistent all the way through.”
Ponting now needs to calm his nerves and work on a new game plan as the 2nd Test match starts from 3rd December.
