Australian captain Ricky Ponting has been reported to the International Cricket Council by Gujarat Cricket Association for smashing an LCD Television in the dressing room after being run out by Zimbabwe’s Chris Mpofu on Tuesday.
“It is true that Ponting smashed the LCD (TV) in the Australian dressing room,” confirmed the Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Rajesh Patel while talking to media reporters. “I think he must have been frustrated at his early dismissal.”
“We have informed the International Cricket Council as well as the Australian team management about the incident,” he added further.
The incident took place during Australia’s World Cup opener against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 at the Sardar Patel stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, 21 February, 2011 and was subsequently reported to the governing body by the local officials.
The 36-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 batsman was found short of his crease at the non-striker’s end as a direct hit from Chris Mpofu sent Ponting back to pavilion for just 28 runs.
He was noticed talking to himself as he angrily walked back to pavilion and it seems as if he lost his cool once he reached the dressing room and saw replay of his dismissal on the TV. It was after then the Australian captain smashed it with his bat in a
fit of fury.
Giving the details of the damage caused to the television set, Patel said that the screen of the TV was not damaged but the set had stopped working after that.
The GCA Secretary also told the media that no apology has yet been made by either the Australian captain or the team management. He added that the Association will hold a meeting on Tuesday to decide on the further course of action.
But according to an ICC source, Ponting is unlikely to face any disciplinary action for his action.
Cricket Australia has not yet confirmed or denied the incident. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s media manager, Lachy Patterson expressed ignorance over any such incident.
