Australian captain Ricky Ponting has been ruled out of the first ODI of the three match series against Sri Lanka after his grandmother died in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854. He is expected to return back for the second and
the third ODIs.
Speaking to the media in a press conference at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Ponting revealed that he will not play in the first game and will attend the funeral on Wednesday.
"My grandmother down in Launceston has passed away on the weekend. The funeral is down in Launceston tomorrow. I'll be flying out tomorrow morning to attend the funeral and then flying straight back to
the ground tomorrow afternoon," said Ponting.
In his place, Michael Clarke will lead the Australian side. Clarke is Ponting’s deputy in the side and the captain of the T20I side. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at Vizag. Ponting,
on the other hand, has yet to play an ODI since July when he captained the side against England.
Ponting’s absence means that the Aussies have yet to decide on their final playing eleven. With rain stalling their training session, it looks likely that the eleven will be announced only on the match day.
However, Ponting did say that if the pitch and the weather allowed, Tasmanian left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty may make his ODI debut in the first ODI. Ponting said, "There's no doubt that he's been probably
the best performed spinner in Australia in the shorter forms of the game for the last few years now. He's become a match-winner for Tassie in that period of time. He's someone that I do know quite well.”
Ponting also plays for Tasmania.
