Ricky Ponting to play for Tasmania in Ryobi Cup final – Cricket News Update
After being dropped from the national ODI squad, veteran batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377 is resorting to the domestic circuit, in order to maintain his form for Test cricket, where he will be playing for Tasmania in the Ryobi Cup final against South Australia at the
Adelaide Oval on February 25.
Following a poor performance during http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s ongoing tri-series, during which Ponting has scored a disappointing 2, 1, 6, 2, and 7. The National Selection Panel dropped him from the ODI squad, after which he vowed to focus on Test and domestic cricket,
saying he was particularly eager to play for Tasmania again.
“He's very keen to play,” the Tigers’ coach, Tim Coyle, said. “(…) One thing he's not done in his career is he hasn't played in a winning Tasmanian title team. That's really high on his agenda. He's very excited by the fact that he's going to get this chance.”
Coyle went on to say that there was a batting spot in the team that needed to be filled, and it was great to have one of the best batsman Australia has produced to fill that slot. He added that Ponting’s experience would be a 'fantastic bonus' for the team,
and praised the native Tasmanian for his commitment and loyalty to the state side.
Punter now lives in Sydney, but according to Coyle, he is ever-ready to groom the youngsters in the Tasmanian squad, and pass on his experience.
Ponting debuted for his state side in November 1992 in a first class match, at the age of 17, which made him the youngest player to play for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield. The Ryobi Cup final will be Ponting’s first domestic match since December 2007,
and the first domestic final he will be playing since http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, during which he failed to perform well, scoring 1 and 28.
The Tigers, who are currently second on the Ryboi Cup points table, directly below http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Australia-c844, and have won 6 ODIs this summer. Whether Ponting’s powerful presence can propel them to the ultimate victory remains to be seen.
