Ricky Romero reflects on game as Toronto Blue Jays go 1-0 in series against Los Angeles Angels
The Toronto Blue Jays were one of the luckier teams of the night on Monday, September 19 when they beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The club had a lot of help from the Angels who committed two costly errors. However Ricky Romero was in the mix to keep the Angels from reaching the sky with their bats. The top striker pulled nine innings of pitching in the encounter to work out a no-decision.
The starter, currently on 15-10, moved to ground his rivals in 110 pitches. He allowed just two runs off six hits in the game. The two runs scored against came from two homers. Torii Hunter smashed the first one for the Angels in the second. Mark Trumbo
then came in to hit the ball out of the park in the fifth. The player was defiant as he held the rivals to two runs and pushed the game to the 10th inning.
Mike McCoy earned the club their first victory in the series when the player ran home on a ground ball single from Adam Lind. Romero knew his figures and pitching was not the only thing on play.
"It's a total team effort here," said Blue Jays’ starter Ricky Romero. "We've been playing well and these guys don't let down. We're doing everything possible to win."
The odd thing about Romero’s outing though, was his first strike-out. The player had 168 strike-outs in the season, prior to the game. He moved to his first strike-out, in this peculiar fixture, in the sixth when he took out Howard Kendrick.
"Great sink today on the ball," Romero said. "A lot of ground-ball outs, a lot of quick outs, and I was able to get into the ninth inning. That team, they swing the bat and they make you throw strikes. They came out swinging and it worked to my advantage."
Romero may be able to play one more game in the season but nevertheless, he has been one of top pitchers in the league. His contribution has been a revelation for the side.
