Ricky Romero shines as Toronto Blue Jays defeat Oakland Athletics 7-0 – MLB Update
Ricky Romero combined energy and experience on Thursday, August 18 to pave an emphatic 7-0 win for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Oakland Athletics. Barely allowing three hits, he executed the pitches with perfection to win the first of the four-game
series.
Such was his authority on the game that the Athletics found it beyond themselves to play. "What he's done is slow the game down mentally," Farrell said. "He's not rushed into any pitches ... and in key spots he's made some big pitches.”
His rival, the Oakland Athletics starter, Trevor Cahill allowed seven runs in the five innings that he pitched, prompting a change that made Athletics bring in the relievers to stop the flow of runs.
Once Ricky Romero pitched the first inning, a scoreless one followed by that of Cahill, the Jays’ hitters took Cahill to task in the second. Brett Lawrie had a hit to score the first run for the Jays, a lead that Romero successfully defended.
Adam Lind had a single and Colby Rasmus followed with a two-run homer to take the lead to 4-0 by the end of the fourth inning. Rickey Romero unleashed his fastballs with magical accuracy and speed, the lead remained intact.
Lind singled to right in the fifth to make it 5-0 for the Toronto Blue Jays as Cahill found himself in great trouble, unable to contain the Jays’ hitters. With the offence playing extraordinarily well, Romero played his part with unplayable pitches, not
allowing any hit to the struggling Athletics’ offence.
J.P. Arencibia got a two-run single in the sixth to that added to the woes of the Oakland Athletics, compelling the team management to bring Bruce Billings to pitch. While he was able to pitch well subsequently, the Athletics’ offence was fairly out of touch
to play their part.
Jordan Norberto also pitched a good eighth inning followed by that of Craig Breslow, but it was Ricky Romero who shone with his effective innings. He pitched the last one as shut-out, giving only three hits in the whole game and not allowing any runs to
earn the Jays a 7-0 victory.
"He pitched like he's been on the run for the last five or six outings," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "He was down in the strike zone, he was efficient. When he gets in that rhythm he doesn't try to do anything more than what the situation's calling
for."
Toronto put in a brilliant performance as they managed to shut-out the Athletics and get a much needed victory. It will be interesting to see how the Blue Jays carry their winning momentum forward into their next match-up.
