Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton succumbs to temptation
The affair between athletes and drugs, be them performance enhancing or recreational drugs has been going on for decades. Substance use or abuse has led to the doom of many greats in the world sports. Not only has it ruined the professional careers of many but, it has also ruined the image of many athletes, who took years to establish a certain standard and level of respect among an international fan base.
Richard John Hatton was a professional boxer, who fought his first bout back in 1997 in which he defeated his opponent by a total knockout within the second round. It earned him the nickname Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton.
John was born in Britain. He was raised in Stockport, Great Manchester. At the time Richard was only nineteen years old. His first win landed him in Madison Square Garden, New York, an overwhelming stage to perform at, especially when it was only his second match.
The Hitman rose to success much quicker than expected by anyone perhaps. He went on a nonstop winning streak, knocking out opponents as they came. Soon Richard became an international boxing icon in the Light welterweight and welterweight division. His record speaks for itself with him becoming the World Light welterweight Champion on three occasions, in the World Boxing Association, in the International Boxing Federation and in the International Boxing Organization, respectively. Along with these accomplishments Ricky has been the World Welterweight champion for the WBA and has also been awarded the Fighter of the year award in 2005 as per the Ring Magazine.
The Hitman continuously increased his fan following, mostly in Europe. His presence and talent was known all over the world. For a long while many considered him to be the best pound for pound boxer around. His consistency in the ring was simply outstanding and unrivalled. For a long period of time it looked as if he would not be defeated by anyone in his weight category. If he had done so, he would have matched the Italian-American boxer Rocky Marciano, who is the only boxer, who retired with the honour of being undefeated.
Ricky, however, did not end his career without being beaten. Nevertheless, he came as close as he possibly could in achieving that feat. Ricky ended his pro-boxing career with winning forty-five out of the forty-seven matches that he fought. Only two losses were linked to the British fighter. He had a magnificent life as a boxer, earned a lot of respect from his supporters and undoubtedly became an inspiration for many. He created a new level of quality and excellence.
The former world champion, however, will not be remembered for all the greatness and unmatched power and strength that he possessed. Just a couple of days ago the appreciated and iconic figure was secretly filmed doing Class A drugs in the form of cocaine, instantly destroying the impression he took years to build.
When an athlete reaches the level and standard Ricky did , they become role models for many, specifically those who aspire to be like them , and in this case all those who were constantly enthused by the fabulous tenure of Hatton . He was recorded abusing the substance along with a lady Irish boxer, who was a National senior women’s boxing champion back home in Ireland.
The point to this is that, now the last global memory millions will have of him will be the great Hatton being involved in a drug scandal. It is the latest publicity he has received, which no doubt has probably developed feelings of revulsion and disappointment in the hearts of numerous fans.
The Hitman had a wonderful life as the greatest boxer in his division for a very long duration of time. It only takes one immoral move to tarnish everything a legendary figure works years to earn. How many more greats will lose everything by doing something that will give them momentary pleasure at the cost of a lifetime of grief? When will these superstars and icons realize that they ultimately do affect individuals who look up to them?
The United States was shocked when it found out that Michael Phelps, probably the greatest swimmer of all time and a worldwide hero, was photographed smoking marijuana. He lost his value instantly with sponsors backing out from potential deals and supporters feeling cheated. Another example is Martina Hingis, a tremendous tennis player who reached the number one ranking in women’s tennis. She was caught using cocaine and was forced to retire, simply out of embarrassment.
Current legends must realize that the heights of stardom that they have reached can only be maintained through strict resolve and character. To become globally famous it takes unlimited time and dedication. Losing it all however, can only take a few moments of weakness. Richard John Hatton will most likely regret his decision for the rest of his life, just as so many other talented athletes are living in constant remorse due to their lack of respect for their supreme status.
