Rico Ramos nails Efrain Esquivias in non-title bout, gifts Efrain career’s 1st loss – Boxing News
Rico Ramos, the former WBA World super bantamweight champion, made an impressive return on winning track by grabbing a majority decision win over Efrain Esquivias, the current NABF super bantamweight champion, in a non-title eight-round bout held on June
23, 2012.
The duo headlined the classic pay-per-view organised and promoted by Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor. The showdown was on-aired from Sportsmans Lodge, Studio City, California, United States and was broadcasted live on Telefutura’s renowned boxing show ‘Solo
Boxeo Tecate’.
The event was co-headlined by the non-title super flyweight bout between Matthew Villanueva and Bruno Escalante and also saw John Molina take on Miguel Angel Munguia in a non-title eight-round light welterweight action.
Ramos was coming off his career’s very first unfortunate loss, a defeat in which he even lost his WBA world title. The last bout’s knockout loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux was enough to motivate the Californian to put forth an explosive showdown.
Also known as ‘Suavecito’, Rico possessed a clear upper hand in almost all the technical and statistical facets of the sport. Despite being seriously overshadowed by Rico’s experience, Efrain did not show any kind of intimidation and displayed sheer resilience.
During the eight-round bout, Rico strived hard to knock the Carson hailing proud out but Efrain did not allow Ramos to connect any raw-powered jabs. Efrain impressively defended his jaw and kept on pummelling Rico by using his reach advantage.
At the end of the day, it was Rico who outscored the fellow Californian by using his experience. Even the points allocated by the judges portrayed the fact that the bout was a toe-to-toe one.
After collecting 78-74, 78-74, and 76-76 scores, Ramos admitted the stiffness and hard chin of his Saturday night opponent and stated, “He was tough, I knew he was going to be tough. He came forward at me a lot like I remember from fighting him in amateurs,
but we prepared for that and we were ready for him. He went hard to the body, and so I came back with body shots of my own, and I was landing the cleaner shots. It feels great to be back in the win column. I'll be coming back for my belt soon.”
Rico is now back on the win track and will soon again become a part of the title contention scenario. This was Ramos’ 21st career win in a total of 22 bouts whereas Efrain was unlucky to defend his 16-bout undefeated streak and received his career’s
very first loss.
