Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012: Lydia Ko seeks to prove her mettle once again
Amateur Lydia Ko is ready to prove her mettle once again when she tees off at the upcoming Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, set to be played from September 13-16, at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, Wirral, United Kingdom.
Ko hails from New Zealand and is the youngest contender in the Ricoh Women’s British Open roster. However, her performance in recent tournaments has helped her take a giant leap in her amateur career and on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour.
Ko’s claim to fame is her stunning victory at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, held in late August, at Vancouver Golf Club, Canada.
The triumph at Vancouver earned Ko the title of youngest player to win an LPGA event. However, she is still playing on the Tour as an amateur contender and has expressed her intentions to stick to that status until she finishes her high school.
The upcoming event at Hoylake is likely to turn into a nerve-jangling battle, as almost all the top-ranked LPGA stars have confirmed their commitment to take part in the Ricoh Women’s British Open.
Sharing her thoughts during the pre-tournament interview at Wirral, Ko said that she is pretty happy to have found an opportunity to play among big names. Moreover, she will put her best foot forward to shine once again.
The Kiwi golfer said that she may not have as much experience as top-ranked players, but her victories at the CN Canadian Women’s Open and the US Amateur will surely help her keep the momentum going.
Ko pointed out that beating players, who are far better than her, was an amazing experience, and she thinks that racking up the two big titles is her best memory.
She mentioned the tough weather conditions she experienced during the practice round on Tuesday, saying if the wind remains strong in the next two or three days, it can be pretty difficult for players.
“I actually played yesterday. It was really windy. On the first hole I went in the right rough and second shot in the right rough and then third shot in the right rough again, so it's tough (laughing),” Ko said.
“And I consider myself quite, you know, consistent, quite straight off the tee, and it was quite tough. Yeah, I reckon it's one of the hardest golf courses I've ever played”.
