Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012: Stacy Lewis falters in opening round

American Stacy Lewis has been tearing her rivals apart in the current LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) season, but she could not live up to the expectations of her fans in the first round of the
ongoing Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012.
Lewis, who currently ranks second in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, has been on fire in the 2012 season as she has racked up two titles so far.
The American golfer is eager to grab more achievements this year, but the ongoing British Open 2012, one of the majors co-sanctioned by LPGA Tour and LET (Ladies European Tour), seems to be troubling her.
Lewis has been known to put up a tough fight on the course, but when she entered the Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Thursday, her confidence waned.
Having shot a 74 in the opening round, the world number two golfer has let several less-experienced players edge past her on the leaderboard.
She started the round with a clear head as she managed to par the first two holes. She, however, faltered on the par-4 third hole as she carded a bogey. Then on the 8th, she scored a bogey once again.
On the back nine, Lewis’s performance remained rickety because most of her shots lacked precision. She parred five holes in row and registered a double bogey on the difficult par-3 15th.
She also shot one birdie and an eagle on the back nine.
Observers said that Lewis may make the play close in the next two rounds, but she will have to atone for her first-round lapses in order to keep on the safe side.
Observers pointed out that those players who have looked awful so far in the current LPGA season, have managed to grab impressive positions on the leaderboard, given the stats of first round. But they said
it will take plenty of effort for Lewis to outrival these contenders.
Lewis’s archrival Yani Tseng performed much better in the opening round of the major tournament. Tseng is currently the number one golfer in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, but clinging to her ranking has
now become her biggest concern.
Tseng scored a 72 in the opening round, making a promising start.
