Question:

Ridding the kids, dog, home and yard of ticks?

i found a tick on my daughter's neck. i've removed it and will check the rest of the little ones and the dog, but i need to take care of the problem.

so, what i need to know is : what should i use to treat the yard? do ticks live in trees? under ground? in little log cabins?

basically, i don't know anything about ticks and i don't want a repeat of this. i know they carry some pretty serious illnesses for people and dogs and my dog is too young yet for heart worm treatment.

usable information and an effective way of getting rid of them would be great.

thanks!

  1. The only sure fire way I have ever found is having guinea fouls on the premises. They will eat every tick there but the noise they sometimes make is  very annoying.

  2. ticks hang out in trees and tall grass waiting. only the females suck blood, and they need it to produce eggs. i have read that they can survive over-winter, waiting. they don't fly very well.

get the dog a flea/tick collar. check the kids regularly during tick season, especially the head. ticks are bumps that weren't there before. they do not burrow into the skin.

Oh dear, you are in trouble.because these ticks carry multiple deceases. They look like a beetle and black in color. They burrow into the flesh until they reach the soft tissue and suck the blood. All you will see of one when they embed is their body, the head will be totally embedded, and so, if you attempt to dislodge one of these you must be careful not to pull the body from the head. Area's they will attack are the arm-pits and the groin nice soft areas. One consolation is that they do ot transmit any decease until they have been embedded for 36 hours, so you have the opportunity to get rid of them before that happens. There are 2 main common ticks in America, and you can find out about these by clicking on the link at the head of this answer. Finally, They may trigger an alergic re-action, and this can manifest itself, in the shape of 2 red rings forming around the affected area. See your phisician. These Ticks live in grassy areas, or wooded areas. I really hope this helps you.  .

  4. ticks usually come from cows etc there mainly found in fields waiting to latch on to there next meal there also found on long grass so i would get your lawn cut short and you can get a ointment from the vets to stop them going on your dog but its very important to get rid of them from your kids and dogs as it could paralyse them and it could eventually kill your dog im not quite sure on how to get rid of them from your garden try looking the internet for that one
